We had a church activity that we needed Fijian fans to use as props for a Fijian dance number. This is what I came up with. I realize the patterns are not Fijian but take what you want from this and make it better. This is just a quick tutorial of how to put a basic fan together.

- Scissors
- Glue gun & glue sticks
- 2 Large craft sticks
- Cardboard
- brown paper bags or packaging paper
- black crayon or markers
- 1 piece of 8x11 paper (scrap paper is fine)
1. Take a piece of scrap paper and fold it lengthwise. Then draw a half spade, with the center on the folded side. |
2. Once you cut it out and unfold it, it should look like this. |
3. Take your pattern and trace it onto cardboard. Then cut out. |
5. Using black crayon or marker, draw a geometric design or pattern on one side of both spade paper cutouts. |
6. Take two large craft sticks and get your glue gun warmed up. |
7. Squeeze a big glob of hot glue on the top of one stick and press onto the bottom of CARDBOARD spade. |
8. Do the same with the other stick on the back side of the cardboard so that both sticks line up evenly against one another. This provides extra support for the handle. |
9. Squeeze hot glue all over one side of the cardboard and place the back side of your spade paper on the glue. Do the same with the other side. |
10. Cut fringe all the way around your spade paper. The cardboard in the middle will keep you from cutting in too far. |
11. Take your fingers and rub them over the fringe to bend it and add dimension. |
Here's the finished product! |
